When designing for a friend, you tend to go deeper than the stories they tell and end up designing more than what they asked. The more intimately you know them, the more the design signifies that person. This project, named The Rachel Project, was one of the most exciting projects I've done since this is for my good friend, Rachel.
This studio unit, measuring almost 40 sq.m. was the perfect space to play around with some ideas for my fun-loving friend. For starters, she wanted a nice clean look with a natural feel that's why we went with a neutral palette and straight lines. After living here for a few years, she definitely outgrew the space which no longer works for her lifestyle. Knowing that she loves reading, we made sure to put in a lot of shelves and storage for all her personal belongings, most especially her books. Besides being an avid literature fan and a writer, we put in a custom work desk complete with power outlets and drawers. One nifty feature is that the design of the desk allows it to double as a room divider. The box shelf above the desk is divided as well, with one side having space for small items and the opposite side which is more suitable for books.
Being over ten years, the place definitely needed some work. The old cabinets needed to go, so we replaced them with a customized wardrobe and shoe cabinet. Since the existing flooring was exposed to some water damage, we decided to go with wood style floor tiles which served the purpose of looking cozy, but still be easy to clean and water-proof. The toilet and bath needed some work as well. Here we provided Rachel a larger vanity mirror with shelves, as well as a customized lavatory counter that replaced her old pedestal type one. Lastly, the kitchen needed an upgrade with a new counter as well as the addition of classic looking subway tiles for the back splash.
Overall, this project was both a challenge and a joy to do. A lot of repairs needed to be done and a lot of new features were added as well. At the end of the day, I'm happy to say that the project was a success and I was able to help my friend design a space that's truly her.

There are many ways to convert old metal drums or chemical barrels into something more useful. With the right idea, these over-sized cans can be turned into an armchair, a side table with a hidden bookshelf, or even a simple barbecue grill. Given the small size of this old drum I had, it was the perfect size for a stool that doubles as a side table with hidden storage. Starting off with the rusty top, it was replaced with a removable lid made of wood planks and finished with a clear coat of lacquer. Next was a quick clean of the drum body and a coat of lacquer as well to keep the can clean to the touch and prevent further corrosion. Lastly, a couple of right sized ball casters give this stool the mobility I need to move it and use it wherever I want. I now have a multi-functional industrial piece that sits perfectly well beside my cozy couch.

Weekends are made for getaways, either up in the mountains or maybe even at the edge of the sea. Lying under the palm trees, sand beneath your toes and the cool ocean breeze blowing through your hair. In the busy city however, life speeds up and everything can be chaotic, especially in the streets of Manila. This simple condo unit was designed with exactly those two sentiments in mind, to have a sort of getaway home for its owners in the heart of the city. Placed near a highly populated area with nearby universities and business districts, as well as a being in the crossroads between cities, the place was given an energetic burst of yellow on the walls to reflect the vibrant nature of its surroundings. The same type of energy is reflected in the rest of the unit with the tropical colors of its furnishings such as the apple green sofa bed or the red desk chair. To balance all the colors, other custom furniture and built-in modules are finished in nice wood laminates for more earth tones. Finally, a few artworks and personal touches complete the whole tropical look with touches of blue and the feel of the waves. The result, a condo unit with just the basics, but with a totally refreshing feeling in contrast to the buzz of city life.

Bright yellow walls give the room a feeling of energy while a comfy sofa bed from AVINO Fine Living lets you unwind and relax in the living space. The area is furnished with a simple and functional media console by Boxform Interior Designs, while beach themed accessories complete the look.

Bright and airy bedroom is given wart with custom furniture in wood laminates from Boxform Interior Designs. A modern red chair from AVINO Fine Living gives the room an eye catching pop of color.

The Black Box is really a simple do it yourself project done a few years back. This cajón of mine had a tropical design I didn't quite like, not to mention the dirt and damage accumulated over the years. To give it a more modern and masculine edge, I decided to repaint this old instrument in black and gold. Although not having too many photos of the actual process, let me walk you guys through this old project a bit.
The first step I did was to remove the sun pattern around the hole, as can be seen with the discolored area around it. The striking surface is actually quite bruised up as well, resulting from the friction caused by steel brushes. For those unfamiliar, these are what steel brushes look like here. On a side note, these steel brushes can be used as alternatives to hands for a different sound and play style. Before painting, the striking surface had to be disassembled first, followed by the rubber footings of the instrument.

The whole restoration process wasn't really well documented back then, but these old Instagram photos will hopefully suffice. After disassembly, the box needed lot's of sanding and bits of filler for gaps and cracks on the body. Once the old layers of lacquers and topcoats were all sanded off and all cracks filled and sanded smooth, came the first coat of paint. Then followed by alternating processes of sanding and painting to get a nice and even coat covering all over the Black Box.

To get the colors I wanted, the paint had to be custom mixed. In this case, a base of black with hints of white to get the right shade of charcoal black, with a bit of silver paint for a subtle luster. Once it was all nicely painted, I did a final process of light sanding for a bit of texture on the piece and finished with a spray of clear coat. Using commercial canned spray paint, I did the striking surface in a beautiful and lustrous gold. The final step now is to reassemble all the parts and have an edgy new piece that acts as both accent furniture and percussion instrument.

The Copper Cube is the product of necessity. One, making good use of old marble and two, by providing the client a functional and beautiful piece of furniture. The frames were designed with simplicity in mind, using simple geometric shapes that will have a timeless appeal. Not to mention having the strength and stability to support the weight of the marble slab, made from welded steel in copper finish. The end result is a side table that combines the aged marble and the geometric frame for that modern elegant look.
