When designing for a friend, you tend to go deeper than the stories they tell and end up designing more than what they asked. The more intimately you know them, the more the design signifies that person. This project, named The Rachel Project, was one of the most exciting projects I've done since this is for my good friend, Rachel.
This studio unit, measuring almost 40 sq.m. was the perfect space to play around with some ideas for my fun-loving friend. For starters, she wanted a nice clean look with a natural feel that's why we went with a neutral palette and straight lines. After living here for a few years, she definitely outgrew the space which no longer works for her lifestyle. Knowing that she loves reading, we made sure to put in a lot of shelves and storage for all her personal belongings, most especially her books. Besides being an avid literature fan and a writer, we put in a custom work desk complete with power outlets and drawers. One nifty feature is that the design of the desk allows it to double as a room divider. The box shelf above the desk is divided as well, with one side having space for small items and the opposite side which is more suitable for books.
Being over ten years, the place definitely needed some work. The old cabinets needed to go, so we replaced them with a customized wardrobe and shoe cabinet. Since the existing flooring was exposed to some water damage, we decided to go with wood style floor tiles which served the purpose of looking cozy, but still be easy to clean and water-proof. The toilet and bath needed some work as well. Here we provided Rachel a larger vanity mirror with shelves, as well as a customized lavatory counter that replaced her old pedestal type one. Lastly, the kitchen needed an upgrade with a new counter as well as the addition of classic looking subway tiles for the back splash.
Overall, this project was both a challenge and a joy to do. A lot of repairs needed to be done and a lot of new features were added as well. At the end of the day, I'm happy to say that the project was a success and I was able to help my friend design a space that's truly her.

This contemporary style loft for a family of three is the perfect starter home for this young couple and their newborn baby boy. Given the small sizes of condominiums nowadays, the couple was lucky enough to get this semi-spacious loft within the prestigious development of Serendra One. My design brief was simple - give the couple a home that has both the elements and feel of a hotel, but also fits a certain budget.
With that in mind, I chose to work with a basic contemporary style with their custom made furniture, against a backdrop of clean lines and neutral colors throughout the home. The use of wood designs is also widely used, giving their home a warm and cozy atmosphere with an elegant look. To improve functionality, certain add-ons and design elements where added whenever possible to accommodate their various storage needs. This simple style worked best for this project, it gives them the perfect home to relax in after a long day, and with a young family such as theirs, it gives them a perfect starting point to design and evolve their home the same way their family grows.
Personally, this has also been one of my favorite projects. Working closely with the couple, our clear and open communication made it easier for us to design their home to perfectly cater their lifestyle needs. From the initial lay-out down to the custom made furniture down to their choice of accessories, the open mindedness and trust of the clients in me with their home has made this project truly enjoyable and a successful transformation.

The living room is the perfect place to hang-out with family and friends while enjoying a good movie. Custom made furniture ensures a good fit in the space while also providing the client control over their preferred colors and finishes. The media console made by Boxform Interior Designs is complete with an array of shelves and cabinets for all of the client's storage needs. The long work desk seamlessly combines with the media console for a cohesive look. Part of the desk also has a hidden door beneath to serve as access to more storage underneath the stairs.

Throw pillows in varying shades of teal and grey give the living room a refreshing look.

A combination of wood finishes and bright playful colors give the cafe-inspired dining nook an energetic and positive vibe.

Hanging up some simple quotes to help brighten up the family while enjoying breakfast at the start of the day.

The bedroom, to maintain a relaxing atmosphere, uses clean lines and simple shapes for the headboard and wall covering. The classic queen-sized bed, with its leather upholstery and diamond tufting details, stands out with its elegant look while providing the couple a restful night's sleep. A pair of white night stands purchased by the couple keeps their essentials hidden with a single drawer, keeping their table tops clutter free.

A combination of ivory, white and beige colors provides an elegant look and a stress-free ambiance while a modern table lamp provides a warm and cozy atmosphere at night.

The use of varying levels in the ceiling design adds a bit of visual interest while cleverly disguising the smoke detector from view. Creativity in design helps in not only highlighting special features, but also in hiding distractions and eyesores. Challenges such as these always make way for better designs.

Custom built-in module made in collaboration with Boxform Interior Designs. This unit also uses light colored laminates and straight lines for a clean look. A mirror at the end defines the vanity area and visually expands the Master's Bedroom while finger grabs instead of traditional handles for the drawers provides a very minimalist but elegant look. With a built-in unit like this, space is maximized by combining functional furniture and storage solutions all in one. Design secret, one of the drawers is actually a cabinet door which swings open to reveal a shelf with convenience outlets for media players, gaming consoles and other gadgets.

A custom partition with sliding door transforms an awkward corner into a more practical storage closet for this young family.

Echoing the design elements used throughout the unit, dark laminated panels were used to decorate the staircase. This gave the blank open wall a more grounded look, and at the same time transformed this empty space into a canvas wherein the couple can display family photos and collect memories.

For the toilets, walls were dressed in teal to give a more rejuvenating look while a few key pieces completes the look.

This three bedroom condo is my first ever project, completed back in 2014. Initially planned out as a unit for lease, the design for the space needed to be both simple and flexible. The contemporary design allows the unit to cater to a wider audience, using a neutral color palette of varying shades of brown, grays and silver accents. One of the main elements of this design includes the drop ceiling that visually divides the space between the dining area and the living area, while the recessed lighting gives a sense of continuity to the hallway leading to the bedrooms. Another notable feature is the long custom built-in unit running across the wall that cleverly makes use of the empty space. This unit, which includes custom cabinets, open shelves and a work desk, uses fine-grained wood veneer finishes and stainless steel handles for a more elegant look. Similarly, the media panel uses the same wood veneer for the open shelves, mixed with a darker finish veneer for the back panel, for that same elegant finish. The unit is furnished with basic contemporary furniture that are both sleek and multi-functional, partnered with modern lighting fixtures, while all the walls are kept bare. The result is a fully designed condo unit with all the basic amenities, but still allows its dwellers the room to personalize and make this their own.
